An automatic crusher for the medication cart

  • A nurse at a medication cart with a SafeCrush pill crusher

The SafeCrush started at OHSAH, a British Columbia agency for health and safety in healthcare. Its aim was to spare nurses repeated manual crushing and the pill dust it releases (Serrano).

  • A gloved hand placing the second cup in the SafeCrush drawer

Place the medication in a cup and set a second cup on top. Serrano lists safety lasers that ensure the double cup, and the drawer locks during the cycle.

  • A gloved finger pressing the SafeCrush button on a medication cart

Press the crush button: the SafeCrush crushes up to 2.5 g at a time, in a 25-second cycle.

  • Tablets in a cup inside the SafeCrush drawer

The medication is crushed in the cup it was placed in, so it does not need to be poured into another container (Serrano).

Questions about the SafeCrush

Is there a battery-operated pill crusher?

Yes. The SafeCrush runs on a rechargeable battery, so it can sit on the medication cart during the med pass without a cord. It switches off by itself after 2 minutes without use. Serrano does not publish the number of cycles per charge or the charging time: ask us for them with your quote.

How is the SafeCrush different from a manual pill crusher?

With a manual crusher, the nurse supplies the force. With the SafeCrush, the medication sits between two cups in a drawer, the drawer locks, and one button starts a 25-second cycle that crushes up to 2.5 g. Serrano developed it from an OHSAH project in British Columbia to spare nurses repeated manual crushing.

Can multiple medications be crushed at the same time?

The SafeCrush crushes up to 2.5 g per cycle (Serrano). Whether medications can be crushed together, and which ones must never be crushed, is decided by your facility’s pharmacist and a recognized do-not-crush list. LIOMAR does not give advice on medications.

How much does the SafeCrush cost?

The price depends on the quantity. Request a quote and a representative replies within two business days. LIOMAR is an authorized, non-exclusive distributor of the SafeCrush and sells it to healthcare facilities only.
